Tissot PRX Powermatic 80
TISSOT PRX Powermatic 80
Across the globe, watch lovers & many more have been enjoying the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 since it’s release. It’s smart & retro design paired with the fact it is one of the most affordable automatic watches out there is one of the reasons why the PRX is now a staple watch in anyone’s collection, weather you’re an avid collector, or your only just dipping your toe into the world of watches. It’s has ’70s heritage, ’80s feel, and wears like twice it’s price- to say the PRX is popular would be an understatement.
The little details are often sadly lost on more affordable watches. Details that can be the deal breaker to those mindful collectors. Which is why the PRX has captured our attention. I am pleased to say although the PRX’s modest price tag it delivers on every aspect of it’s detail & design. A fact that is best highlighted by examining the watch’s external finish. The PRX Pays Homage to a watch Tissot brought out in the 1970’s.
WHAT’S NEW?
With its decorated dial and a mechanical movement ticking inside, the upgraded PRX Powermatic 80 is more stylish and just a touch more precious than its quartz siblings. Other than the dial and the movement, however, the watches’ cases and bracelets are practically identical. To be exact, the automatic variant measures just about half a millimetre thicker than the case of the quartz models.
The Movement
The signature attribute of this expansive movement family is an impressive 80-hour power reserve, which provides over three days of running autonomy.
the Powermatic caliber inside the new PRX collection utilizes a hairspring made of a patented anti-magnetic alloy called Nivachron. The Swatch Group and ETA teamed up with Audemars Piguet in the early 2010s to develop this material for balance springs, finally unveiling it to the world in 2019. Nivachron is a titanium-based alloy that is resistant to magnetism, shocks, aging, and temperature variation. It provides the watch with better and more consistent chronometric performance over long-term periods of wear. That’s a lot of technology for a £640 watch.
The Dial
By their very nature, stainless steel sport watches tend to share aesthetic similarities. And in the PRX Powermatic 80, Tissot draws on some design traits pioneered by the classics. Most notably, the overall appearance of the embossed “waffle” dial.
On the PRX Powermatic 80 models, Tissot continues the same colour treatment throughout the new “waffle” dials from it’s quartz predecessor. The dial options available are dark blue, Ice blue, pitch black, Dark Green, Mint Green and an attractive pearlescent.
Whichever dial catches your eye, all three share a three o’clock white date aperture with a subtle frame (the silver surround is a nice touch that the quartz PRX options lack), Super-LumiNova-filled stick hands and applied hour markers, a push-pull crown, a sapphire crystal up top, and an exhibition caseback that offers a view of the Powermatic 80 caliber inside.
The Case And Bracelet
The PRX case profile is a highly wearable barrel design that sits remarkably flat on the wrist. Its clean lines flow directly from the single-horizontal-link stainless steel bracelet to the rounded case-band and angular lugs. The raised bezel has a dramatic downward slope that is fully polished and provides an eye-catching frame for each of the dial colour options.
A smooth, consistent vertical satin finish carries from the body of the case to each successive bracelet link. But it’s not all matte; the bracelet links are flanked by polished interiors, which bring a healthy sense of dynamism to the integrated case geometry. Further, the bracelet shares its overall thin form with an impressively sturdy and stable construction, including a smooth, gradual taper to meet the signed twin-trigger butterfly clasp.
